The investigation into the alleged suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has taken a dramatic turn with another reported suicide connected to the case. The Haryana government has sent Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur on leave amidst mounting pressure and controversy surrounding Kumar's death.
Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead at his residence in Chandigarh on October 7, 2025, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. In an eight-page note, Kumar accused eight senior IPS officers, including DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and former Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, of caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, public humiliation, and atrocities.
The family of the deceased officer, led by his wife Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer, has been demanding the arrest of the accused officers and has refused to allow a post-mortem examination until their demands are met. The Chandigarh Police have registered a case and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. The SIT has requested Kumar's laptop to determine who received the suicide note via email, when it was sent, and how soon the recipients accessed it. The laptop allegedly contains a draft of the suicide note. They believe the device could provide crucial insights into the circumstances surrounding his death. The laptop will be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to verify the authorship of the suicide note and confirm whether Kumar himself drafted it on his device.
Amidst these developments, another Haryana police official has reportedly died by suicide. Details surrounding this second death are still emerging, but initial reports suggest the officer accused the deceased ADGP Y. Puran Kumar of corruption in a video. This new development adds a layer of complexity to the already sensitive and politically charged situation.
The Haryana government has taken steps to address the situation, including sending DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave and transferring Narendra Bijarniya, the then Rohtak's Superintendent of Police. IPS Om Parkash Singh has been assigned the additional charge of DGP Haryana during Kapur's leave. The government has also issued directives for strict vigilance and communal harmony across the state, urging police to work closely with community leaders to prevent any untoward incidents.
Political reactions have been sharp, with opposition parties criticizing the state government's handling of the matter. Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale met with Amneet P. Kumar to assure her of full support. Rahul Gandhi also met with the IPS officer's family.
The case has brought issues of caste discrimination and harassment within the higher echelons of the Haryana police force into sharp focus. The investigation is ongoing, and the coming days are likely to be crucial as authorities work to unravel the truth behind these tragic events.
