The father of Udit Gayaki, a 21-year-old BTech graduate who died after allegedly being beaten by police constables in Bhopal, is demanding the harshest punishment for those responsible, saying "They should be hanged". Udit died in the early hours of Friday, October 10, 2025, after an alleged thrashing by two constables in Indrapuri, Piplani.
According to reports, Udit was out celebrating his graduation with friends when the incident occurred. Constables Santosh Bamnia and Saurabh Arya reportedly approached Udit and his friends, who were parked in a car, allegedly on the pretext of traffic rule violations. The officers allegedly abused the youths and demanded ₹10,000 to "settle" the matter of public drinking. When Udit attempted to flee, the constables chased him and beat him with batons.
"Nothing can compensate for my loss. I have lost my only child," said Udit's father, Rajkumar Gayaki, an assistant engineer in the electricity department. He is demanding a CBI inquiry and the "harshest punishment" for the policemen involved.
Following the assault, Udit complained of uneasiness and vomited multiple times. His friends rushed him to AIIMS Bhopal, where doctors declared him dead around 4:00 am. A post-mortem report cited "pancreatic hemorrhage due to blunt trauma" as the cause of death, also noting over a dozen external injuries across Udit's body including his shoulders, waist, abdomen, and private areas.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing a policeman holding Udit while another hits him with a stick. The video purportedly shows officers stripping Udit of his shirt and beating him against a wall.
Rajkumar Gayaki has expressed dissatisfaction with the initial FIR, stating that it mentions only "mild force" was used. "If it was mild, how did my son die?" he asked, also noting the FIR failed to mention the policemen demanding money.
The two constables, Santosh Bamnia and Saurabh Arya, have been arrested and sent to jail. They have been charged under Sections 103(1) for murder, 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt, and 3(5) for common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. They were immediately suspended after the incident.
Udit Gayaki had recently graduated from Technocrats Institute of Technology (TIT) College and had received a job offer from a Bengaluru IT firm. He was the brother-in-law of a DSP with the State's anti-naxal Hawk Force.
The incident has sparked outrage, with hundreds of members of the Kunbi community protesting outside the Piplani police station, demanding strict action. Former Congress minister Sukhdev Panse joined the protest, stating that "Law and order in Madhya Pradesh has collapsed". Authorities have deployed heavy police forces to prevent unrest.
