Cristiano Ronaldo has provided a clearer indication of when he plans to retire from professional football, suggesting it could be within "one or two years". The Portuguese forward, who will be 41 during the 2026 World Cup, confirmed that the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be his last.
Ronaldo, who has played for Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al-Nassr, made these comments during a video call at a Saudi-hosted global summit on tourism and investment on Tuesday. After a career spanning over two decades, since his debut in 2002, the player has amassed over 950 goals for club and country. He extended his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr until 2027 in June.
"Soon for me means in 10 years... No, I'm joking,” Ronaldo stated, before adding, "I'm really enjoying the moment right now. As you know, in football, when you reach some age, you count the months very quick". Despite his age, Ronaldo maintains that he is still performing at a high level. "I feel very good in this moment. I score goals, I still feel quick and sharp. I'm enjoying my game in the national team. But of course, let's be honest. What I mean by soon is probably one or two years".
Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer in international football, with 143 goals. He is also targeting next year's World Cup, the only major title missing from his trophy cabinet.
Ronaldo turns 40 in February 2025. He stated that he has given everything to football during his 25 years in the game and has achieved numerous records with clubs and the national team.
In November 2024, after Portugal’s 5-1 victory over Poland, Ronaldo told reporters that he wanted to keep enjoying football and would continue as long as he felt motivated. He added that he doesn’t see himself managing a team in the future, seeing his future in other areas outside of football.
