Cristiano Ronaldo's future: Unveiling his plans and intentions regarding his eventual retirement from professional football.

Cristiano Ronaldo has provided clarity regarding his retirement plans, indicating that the 2026 FIFA World Cup is likely to be his final major tournament. Speaking at a Saudi forum via video link on Tuesday, the 40-year-old Al Nassr forward stated that he anticipates retiring from professional football within the next "one or two years".

When directly asked if the 2026 World Cup would be his "swansong," Ronaldo responded affirmatively: "Definitely, yes. I'm gonna be 41 years old and I think it will be the moment". This statement suggests that he intends to retire around the age of 41.

Ronaldo, who has amassed over 950 goals combined for his clubs and country, had previously mentioned that he would retire "soon". He has now clarified that "soon" likely means within a year or two, confirming that he intends to remain active in the sport for a little while longer.

The Portuguese superstar is aiming to participate in his sixth World Cup in 2026, a feat that would further cement his legendary status. He came close to winning the coveted trophy in 2006, when Portugal was defeated by France in the semi-finals. Portugal is currently leading Group F in European qualifying and can secure their place in the 2026 World Cup with a victory over the Republic of Ireland on November 13.

Ronaldo joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr in 2023 after his departure from Manchester United. His move to the Saudi League has been credited with attracting other high-profile players to the region. While Saudi Arabia is set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo has confirmed that he will not be playing professionally at that time.

In an interview published last week, Ronaldo mentioned that he has been preparing for his post-football life for some time, with family considerations playing a significant role in his decision. He acknowledged the difficulty of ending his career but expressed that he wants to dedicate more time to his family and children.
