New Delhi: Amid a deepening crisis paralyzing Indian football, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has stepped in to facilitate discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing deadlock. The move follows a high-level meeting between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Indian Super League (ISL) club CEOs that failed to produce a breakthrough.

The crisis stems from the departure of Football & Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the commercial partner that had managed the ISL since its inception. The AIFF's subsequent attempt to find a new partner proved unsuccessful, leaving the future of India's top football league uncertain. The 2025–26 ISL season has been indefinitely postponed, leading to widespread frustration and concern within the football community. Players are without matches, and clubs have suspended training.

I-League clubs, expressing dissatisfaction with the short notice, boycotted the initial meeting between the AIFF and ISL club CEOs. Instead, representatives from both the I-League and ISL met with Mandaviya to seek immediate intervention. A source within the ministry stated that the Sports Minister is meeting with representatives from both leagues to discuss the current impasse. It remains unclear whether AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey will be present at the meeting. When asked about the talks with ISL club executives, Chaubey stated that it would be unethical for him to comment.

In a letter to AIFF General Secretary M Satyanarayan, I-League clubs proposed a unified approach with a single commercial partner for all divisions, including the ISL, I-League, and I-League-2. They believe this would ensure financial stability and promote holistic growth across Indian football. The I-League clubs also urged the AIFF to announce the I-League season within ten days and suggested that the league should commence between December 15, 2025, and January 5, 2026.

Top Indian players, including Sandesh Jhingan and Sunil Chhetri, issued a joint statement expressing their growing desperation. Jhingan voiced the sentiments of many, emphasizing the hard work and sacrifices made, and the unacceptability of the season vanishing in silence. The players' statement reflects the broader anxiety within the Indian football ecosystem, where many livelihoods are at stake.

The Supreme Court, which approved the AIFF's new constitution last year, is closely monitoring the situation as the federation seeks a new commercial partner. The court's involvement underscores the significance of the crisis and the need for a swift and equitable resolution. With defending champions Mohun Bagan having halted training and other clubs facing potential crises, the stakes are high.

Minister Mandaviya has urged all stakeholders to engage in "constructive dialogue" to find a viable path forward. The meeting with I-League representatives signals a proactive approach to address their concerns and foster a collaborative environment. The coming days will be critical in determining the future of Indian football and the possibility of a unified and thriving league structure.
