Punjab Chooses Development: Bhagwant Mann Celebrates AAP Victory in Tarn Taran, Signaling Preference for Politics Focused on Action.

Chandigarh, November 14, 2025 – The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is celebrating a significant victory in the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann hailing it as a clear indication that the people of Punjab prefer "the politics of work". AAP candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu secured the win by a margin of 12,091 votes, defeating Sukhwinder Kaur of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

Sandhu, a former three-time MLA who recently joined AAP, garnered 42,649 votes, while Kaur received 30,558. The victory extends AAP's winning streak in Assembly by-elections, following earlier triumphs in Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal and Ludhiana West in 2024 and 2025. This latest win is expected to provide a morale boost for the party as it heads towards the crucial 2027 state elections.

CM Mann, reacting to the results, stated that the mandate reflects the immense faith people have in the Aam Aadmi Party. He assured residents that every promise made during the campaign would be fulfilled on priority, strengthening the commitment to deliver even better governance. AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the people of Punjab and AAP workers, stating that Punjab has once again expressed its trust in AAP. He also credited Mann's honest leadership for the victory.

The Tarn Taran by-election saw a voter turnout of 60.95 percent. While AAP's vote share decreased slightly from 40.8% in the 2022 Assembly election to 36.2%, the party still secured a decisive win. Independent candidate Mandeep Singh, backed by Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), finished third with 19,620 votes. Candidates from the Congress and BJP, Karanbir Singh Burj and Harjit Singh Sandhu respectively, finished fourth and fifth, both losing their security deposits after failing to secure one-sixth of the total votes polled.

The by-election was necessitated after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June. The win increases AAP's strength to 94 in the 117-member Punjab Assembly. Opposition parties had framed the bypoll as a "semi-final" before the 2027 Punjab assembly polls. AAP leaders are confidently interpreting the result as a sign of continued success in the future.

Celebrations erupted at AAP offices in Tarn Taran and Chandigarh as the results were announced. Party workers danced to drumbeats and burst firecrackers, with Harmeet Singh Sandhu leading a victory march. AAP leaders have credited the party's victory to the development works carried out by the government and a rejection of the divisive politics of opposition parties.
