Bollywood actress Mahima Chaudhry has emphasized the critical role of early detection in combating breast cancer, drawing from her personal experience as a survivor. Speaking at the Young Women Breast Cancer Conference 2025, Chaudhry urged women of all ages to prioritize regular medical screenings.
Chaudhry's breast cancer was diagnosed in 2022 during a routine annual check-up. She had no symptoms and was completely unaware of the cancer. "There were no symptoms. I didn't go in for a breast cancer screening. I just went in for a yearly check-up. I had no clue I had breast cancer," she stated in an interview with ANI. She stressed that cancer isn't easily detected on one's own and can only be identified through tests, underscoring the importance of annual check-ups for early detection and treatment.
Chaudhry's initial tests were negative, but a biopsy revealed cancerous cells. She underwent chemotherapy and has since recovered.
In a video shared on social media in 2022, actor Anupam Kher revealed Chaudhry's condition. He learned about her diagnosis when he offered her a role in his film, "The Signature". Chaudhry said that her doctor suggested consulting an oncologist for further examination. Although she was terrified of the word "cancer," she was motivated by other women and a young boy undergoing treatment.
Chaudhry also reflected on the significant advancements in cancer treatment since her diagnosis three years prior. She noted improvements in affordability, access, and awareness, highlighting the availability of cheaper generic medicines and better support from pharmaceutical companies. She found motivation in the stories of others fighting cancer.
Mahima was last seen in the film The Signature, which also starred Anupam Kher.
Her openness about her experience aims to give strength to other fighters. Medical professionals recommend that women over 40 perform self-examinations and undergo early detection tests, as early diagnosis significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.
