Switzerland have secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, marking their sixth consecutive appearance at the global finals. A 1-1 draw against Kosovo in Pristina on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, was enough to secure the top spot in UEFA qualifying Group B and guarantee their participation.

The match itself was a cagey affair. Both teams started cautiously, with Switzerland controlling possession but avoiding excessive risks in attack. Kosovo, meanwhile, looked to exploit opportunities on the wings. The first half ended goalless, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.

The game sparked into life shortly after the restart. In the 47th minute, Switzerland capitalized on a defensive error, with Rubén Vargas slotting home from close range after a pass from Sow to give the visitors the lead. Kosovo responded well, increasing their attacking intensity. Their pressure paid off in the 74th minute when Florent Muslija fired a precise shot into the corner of the net to equalize. Despite Kosovo's late push for a winner, the Swiss defense held firm to secure the draw.

Switzerland's qualification campaign has been exceptional, remaining unbeaten in Group B with four wins and two draws. They scored 14 goals and conceded just two, demonstrating a solid defensive foundation and efficient attack.

"The boys know what's at stake," said head coach Murat Yakin. "You can feel it every second — at the hotel, in the dressing room and out on the pitch. They manage to combine joy in their play with the seriousness required".

Granit Xhaka, the Sunderland AFC captain, led the Swiss team and earned his 143rd cap. Xhaka's experience and leadership have been vital to Switzerland's success. "On the final evening of international football for the Lads, it's been a resounding day of success with all players tasting some form of victory for their respective nations. Our captain book his spot on the plane for the World Cup whilst there was a goal and an assist for others," Sunderland AFC reported.

Switzerland has consistently been among Europe's leading sides, having lost only one of their last 42 World Cup qualifiers. At the Qatar 2022 World Cup, they reached the Round of 16. However, they have fallen at the same hurdle in each of the last three World Cups. Their best result at a World Cup remains reaching the quarter-finals in 1934, 1938 and 1954. The nation's greatest footballing honor is arguably their silver medal at the 1924 Olympic Games.

Kosovo, who have already secured second place in Group B, will participate in the play-offs.

With a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, Switzerland will aim to make an impact at the 2026 World Cup.
