During a recent bilateral meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House, former U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his assertion that he prevented a war between India and Pakistan. This claim, which Trump has made multiple times, refers to a period of heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations earlier this year.
"I've stopped actually eight wars…Have another one to go with, Putin. I'm a little surprised at Putin. It's taken longer than I thought, but we stopped India and Pakistan," Trump stated during the meeting. He further added, "Wish I could go through the list. You know the list better than I do,". Trump has frequently attributed his intervention to the use of trade tariffs, suggesting that the threat of economic repercussions deterred both countries from engaging in large-scale conflict. He has also stated that the situation was resolved within 24 hours due to his involvement.
The context for Trump's claim lies in the events of May 2025, when India and Pakistan experienced a period of increased border clashes. These clashes followed India's Operation Sindoor, a military operation targeting alleged terror camps in Pakistan, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. Trump has stated that conversations for a truce occurred around May 9, with a ceasefire announced by both countries the following day.
While Pakistan has, on multiple occasions, praised Trump for brokering a ceasefire during the May conflict, India has consistently denied any third-party intervention in de-escalating the tensions. According to India, the ceasefire was a result of bilateral discussions and agreements.
Trump's reiteration of his role in preventing a war between India and Pakistan comes amidst Crown Prince Mohammed's first visit to Washington since the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. The meeting provided a platform for discussions on various issues, with Trump highlighting what he considers to be his administration's foreign policy successes.
