After a five-year absence, India is set to make its return to the prestigious Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, commencing their campaign against Korea on November 23. The 31st edition of this annual men's international invitational field hockey tournament will be held in Ipoh, Malaysia, from November 23 to 30. India, a five-time champion, last participated in 2019, finishing as runners-up.
This year, six teams will compete in a round-robin format: India, Belgium, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, and hosts Malaysia. The top two teams at the end of the league stage will advance to the final. India's schedule includes matches against Belgium on November 24, Malaysia on November 26, New Zealand on November 27, and Canada on November 29.
The Indian squad, led by captain Sanjay, includes goalkeepers Pawan and Mohith HS. The defensive unit consists of Poovanna Chandura Boby, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Yashdeep Siwach, Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, and Sanjay. The midfield will be managed by Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Nilakanta Sharma, Rabichandra Singh Moirangthem, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Mohammed Raheel Mouseen. The attack will be spearheaded by Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Selvam Karthi, Aditya Arjun Lalage, Dilpreet Singh, and Abhishek.
Ahead of the tournament, the Indian team, coached by Craig Fulton, underwent an extensive training camp in Bengaluru. Captain Sanjay expressed confidence in the team's preparation, stating, "We've gone through thorough preparations in the build-up to the tournament with focus on certain areas that we identified." He added that the tournament provides an opportunity to test themselves against strong international opponents and that the team is ready to compete.
Sanjay also highlighted the blend of youth and experience within the squad and the positive energy within the group. "Our preparation helped everyone understand their roles and responsibilities. Now, our focus is on delivering consistent performances and challenging for the title," he concluded.
The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is considered one of the most prestigious invitational hockey tournaments globally. For India, this tournament serves as crucial preparation for the upcoming 2026 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup and the 2026 Asian Games. It allows the team to test new combinations and strategies in a competitive environment.
Several key players are expected to make a significant impact for India. Abhishek Nain has been a consistent scorer, while Jugraj Singh is an emerging drag-flicker. The team aims to clinch their first title in 15 years.
