Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has sparked injury fears after an "accident" during training forced him to withdraw from a scheduled appearance at Altrincham's Christmas lights switch-on event. The Brazilian was set to join Coronation Street actor Sam Aston in launching the town's "Neon Noel" celebration on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
The news of Cunha's withdrawal was first announced by Visit Altrincham via an Instagram post. The post stated, "Unfortunately, Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight's Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons". The organization's announcement, rather than one from the club, was described as a "bizarre turn of events".
As of Saturday evening, Manchester United had not released an official statement regarding the nature or severity of Cunha's injury. This lack of information has left fans anxious about his availability for Monday night's Premier League clash against Everton at Old Trafford.
Cunha's absence would be a significant blow to United. The 26-year-old has become an important player for the Red Devils, since his £62.5 million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer. He has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal.
Adding to United's concerns, several other key players are also currently nursing injuries, including Benjamin Sesko, Harry Maguire, and Kobbie Mainoo. Sesko is expected to be out until the end of the year with a knee injury. If Cunha is unavailable, Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo or Amad Diallo could potentially step into the attacking line. Joshua Zirkzee is also an option.
Despite Cunha's absence, the Christmas lights switch-on in Altrincham proceeded as planned. Hundreds of fans gathered in the town center for the event, which included live performances from various musical groups and an appearance by Father Christmas. Sam Aston, best known for his role as Chesney in Coronation Street and winner of Dancing on Ice 2025, officially switched on the lights.
