Report: Injury sidelines Shubman Gill, leaving way for this star to captain India against South Africa in ODIs.

Team India faces a significant leadership reshuffle as they prepare for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting on November 30. Recent reports suggest that KL Rahul is the frontrunner to replace Shubman Gill as captain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) potentially making the announcement soon.

Shubman Gill, who had recently taken over the ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma in October, is set to miss the series due to a neck injury. He sustained the injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata and was subsequently ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati. Gill has traveled to Mumbai for further assessment and is under observation, with the team management keen on not risking him further, considering the packed international schedule.

Adding to India's woes, Shreyas Iyer, the ODI vice-captain, is also sidelined with an injury. This leaves the team without their captain and vice-captain, creating a leadership vacuum. With both Gill and Iyer unavailable, the selectors are forced to look for a stop-gap captain to lead the side against the Proteas.

KL Rahul has emerged as the likely candidate to take on the captaincy. Rahul has prior experience leading India in 12 ODIs, having won nine of those matches. He has scored 302 runs as captain in ODIs, averaging 33.55 with a strike rate of 82.28.

While veteran Rohit Sharma was initially removed from the ODI captaincy in October, a potential return was considered due to the injury situation. However, sources suggest that the selectors are unlikely to revert to Sharma. Rishabh Pant was also in contention for the captaincy. Pant is currently leading India in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati.

With Shubman Gill likely to miss the ODI series, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to replace him in the squad and potentially open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. Ruturaj Gaikwad is also in consideration for a spot in the squad as a backup opener, having impressed in the unofficial ODI series for India A against South Africa A.

India will host South Africa for a three-match ODI series. The first match will be played on November 30 in Ranchi. Raipur will host the second game on December 3, while the final match will be played on December 6 in Visakhapatnam. Following the ODI series, the two teams will also compete in a five-match T20I series. Suryakumar Yadav is confirmed to lead the T20I team.
