Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed his planned visit to India, citing security concerns following a recent deadly blast in New Delhi. The decision, reported by Israeli media, marks the third time Netanyahu has canceled a trip to India in 2025.
The postponement follows a car bomb explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi approximately two weeks ago. The attack, which claimed the lives of at least 15 people and injured dozens, is considered the deadliest in the capital in over a decade. The incident is being treated as a suspected terrorist attack, raising security concerns for high-profile diplomatic visits.
Netanyahu was scheduled to travel to India later this year to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Israeli officials have indicated that a new date for the visit may be considered next year, pending updated security assessments.
Netanyahu last visited India in January 2018. In 2017, Modi made history as the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel. The strong working relationship between the two leaders has drawn attention in both countries.
Netanyahu's previous cancellations in 2025 included a planned day-long visit on September 9, citing scheduling challenges due to repeat elections in Israel on September 17, and another cancellation before the April elections.
In Israel, Netanyahu's diplomatic engagements are often viewed as a strategic part of his political narrative. He often highlights his relationships with world leaders as a sign of his ability to safeguard Israel's national security.
Following the Delhi explosion, Netanyahu conveyed his condolences to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India. He stated, "For our dear friend Narendra Modi and the brave people of India, I and the people of Israel send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Israel stands firmly with you in sorrow and strength at this time".
While Netanyahu's visit is postponed, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive in India in early December for an annual summit.
