New Delhi, November 26, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has penned a letter to the citizens of India on Constitution Day, urging them to prioritize their duties towards the nation, emphasizing that "every action of ours should strengthen national goals". Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated annually on November 26th to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on this day in 1949.
In his letter, Prime Minister Modi underscored the significance of the Constitution in guiding the nation's progress and highlighted the importance of fulfilling one's constitutional duties as the bedrock of a strong democracy. He stressed that rights and duties are intrinsically linked, echoing Mahatma Gandhi's belief that rights naturally arise from the performance of duties, and that adhering to one's duties forms the basis of social and economic progress.
The Prime Minister recalled that the government declared November 26th as Constitution Day in 2015 to honor the historic document. He reflected on how the Constitution has empowered individuals from all backgrounds to serve the nation. He shared his own experiences of reverence towards the Parliament and the Constitution, recalling bowing at the steps of Parliament in 2014 and placing the Constitution on his forehead in 2019 as a mark of respect.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the responsibility of strengthening democracy by exercising the right to vote. In this regard, he suggested that schools and colleges celebrate Constitution Day by honoring first-time voters who have turned 18. He expressed confidence that inspiring youth with responsibility and pride will strengthen democratic values and the nation's future.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister noted that as India approaches 100 years of independence, the decisions made today will shape the lives of future generations. He urged citizens to place their duties foremost in their minds as India moves towards the vision of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India).
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the members of the Constituent Assembly, including Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, and the distinguished women members whose vision enriched the Constitution. He noted that Constitution Day coincides with the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda, and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, reminding citizens of the primacy of their duties. He credited Patel's leadership for India's political integration and said it was his example that inspired the move to revoke Articles 370 and 35A, bringing the Constitution fully into force in Jammu & Kashmir.
Across the country, various programs and events are being organized by Union Ministries, state and Union territory governments, and local bodies to mark Constitution Day. President Droupadi Murmu led a special event at the old Parliament building's Central Hall, where the Constitution of India in nine languages was launched digitally, along with a commemorative booklet on calligraphy in the original Constitution. The theme for this year's celebration is "Hamara Samvidhan-Hamara Swabhiman" (Our Constitution-Our Pride).
Constitution Day marks a significant moment in India's history, commemorating the adoption of a document that enshrines the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. The Prime Minister's message serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding these values and fulfilling our duties as citizens to build a stronger, more prosperous India.
