New York - India has strongly rebuked Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for raising the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, firmly asserting that the region, along with Ladakh, is an integral and inalienable part of the country. The Indian representative emphasized that this has been, is, and will always remain the reality, regardless of Pakistan's beliefs or desires.
The strong response came during an open debate at the UNSC, where India's Permanent Representative, Ambassador Harish P, addressed Pakistan's repeated references to Jammu and Kashmir, calling it an "obsessive focus" aimed at harming India and its people. Ambassador Harish stated that Pakistan's actions demonstrate a divisive agenda that undermines its ability to fulfill its responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
India has a history of firmly rejecting Pakistan's references to Jammu and Kashmir on international forums, emphasizing the region's integral status within India. Indian representatives have consistently maintained that Pakistan's remarks are politically motivated and intended to divert attention from its own internal issues, including human rights violations.
In addition to addressing the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, Ambassador Harish also spoke about the Indus Waters Treaty, highlighting that India has upheld the treaty's spirit of friendship for 65 years. However, he noted that Pakistan has violated this spirit through acts of aggression, including waging three wars and sponsoring numerous terror attacks against India. The ambassador referenced the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 innocent civilians were targeted and killed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. Due to these violations and continuous support for terrorism, India has declared that the treaty will be held in abeyance until Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism.
India has also called upon Pakistan to end human rights violations in the areas of Jammu and Kashmir that are illegally occupied by Pakistan, where the population is in open revolt against Pakistan's military occupation, repression, brutality, and illegal exploitation of resources. India maintains that the people of Jammu and Kashmir exercise their fundamental rights in line with the country's democratic traditions and constitutional framework.
India's stance on Jammu and Kashmir has remained consistent, with the country asserting its sovereignty and commitment to addressing the needs and rights of the people in the region. India has also expressed its commitment to supporting the UN in its efforts to protect children in armed conflicts and uphold international peace and security.
