Patiala, Punjab – A former Punjab Police officer is in critical condition after allegedly attempting to take his own life at his residence in Patiala on Monday. Amar Singh Chahal, a retired Inspector General of Police (IPS), was rushed to the hospital after reportedly shooting himself.

Police arrived at Chahal's home after receiving information about the incident. He is currently receiving treatment for a severe chest injury. While initial reports suggested Chahal had died, doctors have not confirmed his death, and his condition remains critical.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. A note found at the scene indicates that Chahal was facing significant financial distress due to online fraud. Sources suggest he may have been defrauded of approximately 80 million Rupees (8 Crore) by a sophisticated group of scammers. The note was also addressed to Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Varun Sharma, Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), stated that police teams immediately responded to the scene upon notification of the shooting. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and verify the contents of the note.

Chahal was among those accused in the 2015 Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura firing cases in Faridkot. In February 2023, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a chargesheet in a Faridkot court that named Chahal, along with former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal, and other police officers.
