Nigerian forward Samuel Chukwueze has called for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be given the same level of respect as the World Cup and the European Championship. His comments come amidst controversy surrounding the timing of the tournament, which is currently being held in Morocco.
Originally slated for the summer, AFCON 2025 was rescheduled to December 21st to January 18th, a period that clashes with the domestic season for many European clubs. This scheduling conflict has led to concerns about clubs losing key players at a crucial stage of their respective campaigns.
Chukwueze, who currently plays as a winger for Fulham, will miss up to six games for his club if Nigeria advances to the round of 16. Despite the inconvenient timing, Chukwueze insists that representing one's country in AFCON should be a priority. "We understand they scheduled it at the wrong time of the year, but when it's important, if you get recalled you have to go," he stated. "You don't have any choice, your club can't stop you and no one should say anything bad about the AFCON".
The Nigerian star further emphasized the importance and prestige of the competition. "Everybody wants to play in AFCON. It's one of the best competitions in the world," Chukwueze told On Sports TV. "You have to respect the AFCON the same way you respect the European Championship or World Cup".
Chukwueze's strong defense of AFCON comes as Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Group C. He also helped Nigeria secure the win against Tanzania. Ahead of their second game against Tunisia, his words serve as a rallying cry for the tournament and a reminder of its significance to African players and fans alike.
The Africa Cup of Nations has continued to deliver drama both on and off the pitch. Cameroon, the defending champions Ivory Coast, and Algeria have all secured victories. Algeria made an emphatic start to their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Sudan. Captain Riyad Mahrez struck twice and dismissed suggestions that his performance was a response to criticism.
