Vijayawada: The 87th Senior National Badminton Championships witnessed a day of upsets and thrilling matches as Tanvi Patri stunned eighth seed Isharani Baruah to advance into the women's singles pre-quarterfinals on Thursday. Patri's victory was one of several surprises in the competition, held in Vijayawada.
Rising star Tanvi Patri ended the campaign of Isharani Baruah with a score of 22-20, 21-19. The match was closely contested, with Patri displaying remarkable composure to secure the win against her higher-ranked opponent.
In another notable result, experienced shuttler Shruti Mundada also moved into the pre-quarterfinals after defeating seventh-seeded Jiya Rawat. Mundada dominated the match, winning 21-14, 21-9. Parul Choudhary also secured a place in the next round, overcoming the ninth seed in a hard-fought match with scores of 18-21, 21-18, 21-12.
Top seed Unnati Hooda, second seed Anupama Upadhyaya, third seed Anmol Kharb, and world junior silver medallist Tanvi Sharma also advanced to the next round. Earlier on Wednesday, Unnati defeated Akanksha Matte 21-8, 21-18, while Tanvi Sharma won against Shaina Manimuthu 21-10, 21-14. Aakarshi Kashyap also defeated Lakshya Rajesh 21-7, 21-9, and Ashmita Chaliha beat Kavya Marvaniya 21-7, 21-11.
In men's singles, Aryaman Tandon caused an upset by defeating third seed M Raghu 17-21, 21-11, 21-14 in the round of 32. Abhinav Garg and Rithvik Sanjeevi S also secured their spots in the pre-quarterfinals. Garg defeated 10th seed Abhinav Thakur 21-19, 21-16, while Rithvik defeated 13th seed Orijit Chaliha 21-15, 21-19. Also on Wednesday, Chauhan defeated Ranveer Singh 21-9, 21-13, and D S Saneeth beat Ankit Mondal 21-7, 21-11.
In mixed doubles, Nitin Kumar and Kanika Kanwal stunned sixth seeds Kevin Wong CC and Pranavi N with a 23-21, 21-15 victory. These upsets highlight the depth of talent and competitive spirit at the Senior National Badminton Championships.
