Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly advocated for natural farming, citing chemical fertilizers as the root cause of many diseases. Speaking at a Farmers' Conference in Rewa on Thursday, December 25, 2025, Shah emphasized that natural farming not only boosts farmers' income but also conserves water and promotes public health.

Shah highlighted the government's commitment to creating a comprehensive system to ensure the agricultural produce from natural farming reaches global markets. This system includes soil and laboratory testing, certification, and packaging. He pointed out the increasing global demand for naturally farmed products.

"Chemical fertilisers are the root cause of many diseases today," Shah stated. "Natural farming is an approach that doesn't reduce farmers' income, but instead makes their produce pure," he added. He noted that natural farming is a traditional practice that has been largely forgotten. According to Shah, the dung and urine of a single indigenous cow can cultivate up to 21 acres of land. He emphasized that natural farming increases income, saves water, and protects people from various diseases.

Shah, who also serves as the Minister of Cooperation, mentioned that approximately 4 million farmers in the country have already adopted natural farming practices, including himself on his own farms. He stated that this shift has led to increased production.

Shah has previously spoken about the benefits of natural farming. During an interaction with women cooperative workers from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan in Ahmedabad, he described natural farming as a scientific experiment with numerous advantages, including higher crop yields. He cautioned that growing wheat with chemical fertilizers can lead to health problems such as thyroid issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer. Shah argued that consuming food devoid of chemicals and fertilizers eliminates the need for medication. He also shared his personal experience, noting a 1.5-fold increase in output after implementing natural farming techniques on his farm.

Natural farming is a chemical-free approach that integrates livestock, natural agricultural methods, and diversified crop systems rooted in traditional Indian knowledge. Shah's ministry has established a national-level cooperative institution for purchasing grains produced through natural farming. A cooperative society has also been formed to export farmers' crops, ensuring that profits are directly deposited into their bank accounts.

Speaking at a Cooperative Conference on 'Role of Cooperation in Sustainable Agriculture' in Panchkula, Haryana, Shah outlined the new agriculture policy's foundation: low water usage, fewer chemicals, and lower risk. This involves achieving higher yields with less water through scientific irrigation, reducing fertilizer use through natural farming, and selecting crops with minimal risk through soil testing.

Shah emphasized the Ministry of Cooperation's role in ensuring that farmers receive the full profit from their agricultural and animal husbandry products. The government has strengthened Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) by integrating nearly 30 different fields, including fertilizer and pesticide distribution, cleaning, grading, and marketing of agricultural produce, medicine shops, petrol pumps, gas agencies, and water distribution.
