Grand Casino Arena, December 26, 2025 – Team USA defeated Germany 6-3 in a compelling opening-day matchup at the 2026 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The United States jumped to an early lead, but Germany responded, leading to a back-and-forth contest. Ultimately, the Americans pulled away, securing a comfortable victory to start their tournament campaign.
The first period saw the U.S. come out strong, establishing an early two-goal lead. The initial goal came just a few minutes into the game, setting the tone for an assertive American offense. Chase Reid, assisted by William Zellers and Brendan McMorrow, doubled the lead. Germany struggled to find their footing early on, facing relentless pressure from the U.S. attack.
Germany pushed back in the second period, managing to close the gap and test the American defense. However, the U.S. regained control as the second period progressed, scoring two more goals to restore their commanding lead. The U.S. outshot Germany 16-8 in the second period.
The third period saw a more defensive approach from the United States, who focused on protecting their lead. The American defense clamped down, limiting Germany to only three shots on goal and effectively shutting down any comeback attempts. Despite a couple of power-play opportunities, Germany was unable to capitalize, and the U.S. held on for a 6-3 victory.
William Zellers had a standout performance, scoring twice for the United States. The U.S. dominated in shots on goal, outshooting Germany 46-20.
Looking ahead, the United States will face Switzerland, while Germany will seek to rebound against Slovakia.
