CHENNAI - In a surprising turn of events, Jose Charles Martin, son of lottery magnate Santiago Martin and director of Martin Group of Companies, has signaled a potential shift in his party’s strategy for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Martin, who is set to launch his own political party in Puducherry by mid-December, named Latchiya Jananayaka Katchi (LJK), has expressed openness to forming an alliance with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).

This marks a significant departure from Martin's earlier stance, where he expressed a desire to align with newer entities untainted by the baggage of established political parties. He had previously stated his interest in partnering with Vijay, citing the actor's commitment to a corruption-free society and his independent financial standing as qualities that could contribute positively to governance.

Martin had earlier expressed his frustration with traditional parties. He said that established players are often "stuck with some ideologies" and have "stigmas" already attached to them. "My plan is to attach to somebody new who has no baggage," he said.

The LJK is expected to focus on delivering "real democratic governance" to Puducherry, aiming to transform the Union Territory into a model region for governance standards across India. Martin has been critical of the current political climate in Puducherry, alleging corruption and division.

Meanwhile, TVK has been actively preparing for the 2026 elections, with Vijay authorized to make key decisions regarding electoral alliances. The party has named Vijay as its Chief Ministerial candidate. TVK has announced contesting the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, and the actor has been very critical of the ruling DMK in the state.

Political analysts suggest that an alliance between LJK and TVK could potentially create a significant force in the upcoming elections. Recent polls indicate growing support for TVK, particularly among youth and women. A possible alliance could further consolidate this support base.

Jose Charles Martin's entry into politics follows his established role as a director within the Martin Group, a conglomerate with interests spanning lotteries, construction, property development, and other sectors. The Martin Group has also been involved in philanthropic activities through the Martin Charitable Trust.
