Kochi: Shanthakumari Amma, mother of acclaimed actor Mohanlal, passed away on Tuesday at her residence in Elamakkara, Kochi, at the age of 90. She had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments for several years.
Santhakumari Amma was a constant source of support for Mohanlal, who has often credited his parents and their influence for his success in the film industry. Her death has prompted heartfelt tributes from the film fraternity and fans alike.
Born in Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district, Santhakumari Amma later moved to Thiruvananthapuram with her family following her husband Viswanathan Nair's government service. Viswanathan Nair, who passed away some years ago, was a retired government employee and served as the law secretary to the Kerala government.
Mohanlal was reportedly not at home when she passed away. Close friends and industry colleagues, including superstar Mammootty and his wife Sulfath, visited his residence to pay their respects.
Santhakumari Amma is survived by her son, Mohanlal. The family had faced tragedy earlier when Santhakumari's eldest son, Pyarilal, passed away in 2000. Santhakumari Amma was a calming influence on Mohanlal and was a guiding force for the family.
The funeral is expected to be held on Wednesday in Thiruvananthapuram. Her mortal remains are expected to be taken to Thiruvananthapuram.
Mohanlal has often spoken about the power and unconditional support of his mother in his life, acknowledging her as a major driving force behind his successful career. Even with his worldwide travel commitments, he made it a point to be available for her. After receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he immediately met her upon returning to Kochi.
Santhakumari Amma lived at the family home, “Hill View,” on Kesavadev Road in Mudavanmugal, Thiruvananthapuram, for many years. After reportedly suffering a stroke, she was later brought to Ernakulam by Mohanlal.
