In a surprising turn of events, Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming comedy film Moonwalk, starring Prabhudeva. Directed by Manoj N S, the film is slated for a theatrical release in May 2026. This marks a reunion for Rahman and Prabhudeva, who last collaborated over two decades ago in films like Kaadhalan, Mr Romeo, Love Birds, and Minsara Kanavu.
Rahman will be playing a fictional character described as an "angry young film director". According to director Manoj N S, Rahman's role will add a unique meta-layer to the film's narrative. Rahman's character will not be himself as a music director. Besides acting, Rahman has also lent his voice to all five songs in Moonwalk.
Director Manoj N S shared his experience of working with A. R. Rahman and Prabhudeva, particularly during the shooting of the song "Mayile". He praised Prabhudeva's dance performance and expressed gratitude to choreographer Sekhar Master. Manoj added that Rahman appears throughout the song, bringing a special charm to it, and later accepted an extended role in the film. He said the entire set was happy seeing Rahman having fun as an actor. Prabhudeva, himself a director, was amused by Rahman's natural acting.
Prabhudeva plays the role of ‘Babootty,’ a young film choreographer, blending performance and humor. Yogi Babu, initially announced in dual roles, will also appear in a third role called ‘Dubai Mathew,’ adding to the film's experimental tone.
Moonwalk is produced by Manoj Nirmala Sreedharan, Divya Manoj, and Praveen Elak under Behindwoods Productions. The film features a cast including Arjun Ashokan, Aju Varghese, Satz, Sushmitha Nayak, Nishma Chengappa, Mottai Rajendran, Redin Kingsley, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan, Deepa Shankar, Ramkumar Natarajan and Dr Santhosh Jacob. The technical crew includes Anoop V Shylaja as director of photography, Raymond Derrick Crasta as editor, and Shanoo Muralidharan as art director.
