Linton, president of the Session Technology Foundation, warns that this could create "huge privacy issues, huge security issues," essentially making private communication "impossible to do on an average mobile phone or an average computer". If AI is deeply integrated into operating systems, it might be able to extract data before encryption, sending it to a "black box AI," with unknown consequences for the data. Meredith Whittaker, president of Signal, has expressed similar concerns about operating systems embedding network-connected AI services at a low level, making it impossible for messaging apps to protect user privacy.

A 2024 Nightfall AI audit showed that 63% of ChatGPT user data contained personally identifiable information (PII), but only 22% of users knew how to opt out.
Moreover, Meta's AI training practices have raised alarms, with the company confirming it is training AI models on user data at a massive scale, including over 400 million European users, without explicitly asking for permission. This has sparked criticism and fueled concerns about privacy violations.
The rise of AI-powered cybercrime further complicates the landscape. Cybercriminals are increasingly using AI to escalate social engineering attacks, generate fake identities, and automate fraud. AI enables them to create convincing imitations of voices, craft sophisticated phishing emails, and build entire criminal operations with relative ease. Cybersecurity experts have also identified a critical flaw in AI systems that allows hackers to intercept messages, bypassing encryption. This "man-in-the-middle attack," known as Whisper Leak, involves hackers reading message metadata to infer content.
