Central Government Keeps Domestic LPG Prices Steady, Protecting Households From International Market Fluctuations.

The Centre has announced that there will be no change in the prices of domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, a move intended to protect household consumers from the volatility of global energy markets. This decision comes as a relief to families across the country, ensuring stability in their cooking gas expenses.

While domestic LPG prices remain unchanged, the cost of commercial LPG cylinders has seen an increase. Effective January 1, 2026, oil marketing companies have raised the price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder by ₹111. Following this revision, the retail sale price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi now stands at ₹1,691.50. Additionally, the prices of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders have also been raised by ₹27.

The increase in commercial LPG rates is expected to impact sectors that heavily rely on these cylinders, such as hotels, restaurants, and catering services, where fuel costs are a significant part of their operating expenses.

The stability in domestic LPG prices is attributed to the government's intervention and compensation mechanism. In August 2025, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri praised the Centre's decision to allocate ₹30,000 crores to oil companies in 12 installments. This financial support has enabled oil companies to maintain stable LPG prices despite fluctuations and uncertainty in the global market. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had approved this compensation package on August 8, 2025.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that revisions in commercial LPG prices reflect the fluctuations in global LPG prices and associated costs. The government's priority is to shield domestic consumers from these market volatilities. The effective price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder, which generally costs around ₹950, is available at ₹853 for non-Ujjwala beneficiaries.

This decision to keep domestic LPG prices steady aligns with the government's commitment to supporting household budgets and ensuring affordable access to essential cooking fuel.

In related news, the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, was reduced by 7.3% on Thursday, January 1, 2026. The commercial LPG rate was raised by ₹111 per cylinder, as state-owned oil marketing companies implemented their monthly price revisions aligned with global fuel benchmarks. The ATF price in Delhi was cut by ₹7,353.75 per kilolitre, or 7.3%, to ₹92,323.02 per kl, according to state-owned fuel retailers.
