The U.S. Olympic team roster has been finalized, and Montreal Canadiens fans have noticed two prominent names missing: Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson. The absence of these players from the American lineup for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina is a surprise to many.
Caufield, a right-winger, has tallied 20 goals and 20 assists in 40 games this season, putting him on pace for a 40-goal season. His performance ranks him fifth among American goal scorers in the NHL. Hutson, a defenseman, has also recorded 40 points in 40 games and won the Calder Trophy last season.
Renaud Lavoie commented on the situation, noting that while Team USA is strong, the absence of Caufield and Hutson is a benefit to other competing nations.
Team USA General Manager Bill Guerin and coach Mike Sullivan chose to prioritize experience and familiarity when constructing the Olympic roster. The team features 21 players returning from last season's 4 Nations Face-Off, including Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, and brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk. Quinn Hughes, Tage Thompson, Clayton Keller, and Seth Jones are joining the team after not participating in the 4 Nations Face-Off.
The U.S. Olympic team will have 25 players, an increase from the 23 allowed at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Teams can dress 20 skaters, typically 13 forwards and seven defensemen, along with two goalies. The United States' first game is scheduled for February 12 against Latvia.
The full U.S. Olympic roster includes:
Forwards:
Defense: Brock Faber, Noah Hanifin, Quinn Hughes, Seth Jones, Charlie McAvoy, Jake Sanderson, Jaccob Slavin, Zach Werenski.
Goaltenders: Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger, Jeremy Swayman.
While the decision to leave Caufield and Hutson off the roster may be disappointing for some, it highlights the depth of talent available to Team USA.
