Ruben Amorim Dismisses January Transfers to Manchester United, Sticking with Current Squad and Strategy.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stated that he does not anticipate any new signings during the January transfer window. Amorim said on Thursday, January 2, 2026, that there have been "no conversations" regarding potential squad changes with the club's bosses.

Manchester United spent over £200 million on new players during the summer transfer window, bringing in players like Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo. Despite the summer investment and the team's current position just three points away from a Champions League spot, Amorim has suggested that this will not change the club's plans for January.

Speaking at a press conference, Amorim stated, "The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversations at this moment to have any change in the squad". He added, "There's a process, there's an idea that is going to continue".

Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea and three points behind Liverpool, who occupy the fourth Champions League spot. Despite the optimism around the team's chances of qualifying for the Champions League, Amorim has cautioned against complacency, noting the proximity of several teams behind them in the league table. "We are near the places of the Champions League, but we are also near like eight teams behind us," he said. "So let's focus on the next game".

Amorim also addressed speculation about potential player departures, saying that no players have asked to leave the club. This comes amidst reports of interest from Serie A side Roma in Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee and rumors surrounding Kobbie Mainoo. Amorim has previously emphasized Mainoo's importance to the team's future. "Kobbie Mainoo will have the opportunity he has all the time," he stated, adding, "he's going to be the future of Manchester United, that is my feeling".

Injuries and international absences have stretched United's squad, forcing Amorim to include several academy players in recent matchday squads. Looking ahead to their game against Leeds United, Amorim indicated that the squad would remain largely unchanged due to ongoing injury issues.

While the club invested heavily in the summer, some needs remain. A central midfielder was on their radar, but they lacked the finances to pursue targets such as Carlos Baleba or Elliot Anderson. Amorim is also yet to address the wing-back position, which is a vital part of his tactical approach. Despite this, Amorim seems content to work with the current squad, trusting the existing "process" and "idea" in place at the club. He said on Boxing Day that sometimes he has "another idea" to director of football Jason Wilcox and the board when it comes to recruitment, but maintained that "common ground" must be found before a signing is made.
