Japan has officially announced its 23-player women's ice hockey roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. The team, a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, is aiming to make a significant impact on the international stage. Japan secured its spot in the tournament after a decisive 6-1 victory over Poland in the Olympic Qualification Event.
The forward line is headlined by Akane Shiga, a former PWHL player currently showcasing her talent in Sweden with Lulea HF. Shiga is in her second season with Lulea in Sweden, and this will be her second Olympic Games. Joining her are Haruka Toko, also playing professionally in Sweden, and five members from Daishin IHC: Rio Noro, Riri Noro, Ai Tada, Umeka Odaira, and Rui Ukita. Rounding out the forward group are Suzuka Maeda, Mei Miura, Remi Koyama, Yumeka Wajima, and Makoto Ito. Mei Miura was Japan's leading scorer at the 2025 World Championships.
Anchoring the defense are Aoi Shiga and Ayaka Hitosato, both currently playing in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL) with MoDo and Linkoping, respectively. The defensive lineup also includes Nana Akimoto, Kohane Sato, Shiori Yamashita, Kanami Seki, Shiori Koike, and Akane Hosoyamada.
Miyuu Masuhara, the starting goaltender at the 2025 World Championships, will return to guard the net. She will be supported by Riko Kawaguchi and Rei Halloran. Halloran currently plays for Järnbrotts HK in Sweden.
The team is composed of players from both domestic Japanese leagues and international leagues, including the SDHL. Of the 23 players on Japan's roster, five of them play in Europe, and all of them play in Sweden. This blend of experience is expected to provide a competitive edge as Japan faces its opponents in Group B, which includes host Italy, Sweden, France, and another qualifying team. Japan will face off against Team France on February 6.
Japan's participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics marks their 23rd appearance at the Winter Games. The nation has been steadily improving in international tournaments, consistently challenging top teams. The unveiling of the women's ice hockey roster marks a significant step towards the highly anticipated Winter Olympics in Milan.
