Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the 47th National Junior Boys Handball Championship on Saturday, January 10, 2026. The championship is being held at a government school in Pitampura.
Gupta addressed the young athletes from across the country, encouraging them to bring glory to the nation. She assured them that the government is committed to providing all necessary facilities and support. The Chief Minister also announced a ₹1 lakh prize for the winning team.
"The dedication of these players to the sport shows their connection to the country," Gupta stated, emphasizing that the youth are the true strength of the nation. She highlighted the government's efforts to revitalize the sports system in Delhi, which includes increasing allowances for players and providing financial assistance from the school level.
Gupta further mentioned that the government has increased the allowance for every Delhi player competing at the state level to ensure they can continue their practice without obstacles. The financial rewards for winning medals at international competitions like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games have also been increased. Now, a gold medalist at the international level will receive ₹7 crore, a silver medalist ₹5 crore, and a bronze medalist ₹3 crore.
The championship features young handball players from all over India. The event aims to promote sportsmanship and provide a platform for budding athletes to showcase their talent. The Delhi government has been actively working to encourage sports by improving facilities, increasing financial support, and implementing various schemes to motivate young players. This commitment extends to providing enhanced training and infrastructure to help athletes compete at the highest levels.
