In a surprising turn of events, comedian and actor Vir Das revealed the story behind Imran Khan's unexpected cameo in his directorial debut, "Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos." The film, produced by Aamir Khan Productions, marks Imran Khan's return to the big screen after a hiatus since 2015's "Katti Batti".
According to Das, Khan's involvement began with a simple, casual text message. "One day, I got a text from Imran," Das shared. "He doesn't even use WhatsApp." The message, as Das recounted, simply said, "Hey, I hear the movie is shaping up nicely. Can I come and do something fun in the film?".
Das admitted that Khan's message caught him off guard, but it also sparked an idea. Instead of offering Khan a small, insignificant role, Das decided to craft a character specifically for him, something "entertaining and wild" that Khan had never attempted before. "After he reached out to me, I went back and incorporated him into the script of Happy Patel," Das explained. "I was like, yes, definitely, but then give me some time. I'll craft a character for you that is entertaining and wild, and we need to do something you've never attempted before".
Das wanted to ensure that Khan's return was memorable. He stated, "Let me design something cool and come at you in a few days. If we're doing it's gotta pop and be funny as f***".
"Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos" is touted as a spy-comedy film, also starring Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi, Mithila Palkar, and Aamir Khan. The trailer, unveiled last month, offers a glimpse into the film's comedic and quirky energy, with Vir Das as the titular character constantly finding himself in violent situations and run-ins with the Goa Police.
A promo video released by Aamir Khan Productions shows Aamir Khan questioning Vir Das’s directorial choices. The video ends with a glimpse of Vir, Aamir, and Imran in quirky roles.
"Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos" is co-directed by Kavi Shashtri and co-written by Amogh Ranadive. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on January 16, 2026. It marks a reunion for Vir Das, Aamir Khan, and Imran Khan, who previously worked together in the 2011 film "Delhi Belly".
Imran Khan's journey in Bollywood began as a child artist in films like "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" (1988) and "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar" (1992). He made his adult debut in the 2008 romantic comedy "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" and went on to star in films like "Delhi Belly" (2011), "Break Ke Baad" (2010), and "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein" (2013).
The film is expected to showcase Vir Das's signature comedic style, both in his performance and direction. Promotional activities and trailers have already generated considerable anticipation for the film and Imran Khan's return to the screen.
