At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Mark Ruffalo turned the red carpet into a platform for protest, using his presence to draw attention to the recent fatal shooting of Renee Macklin Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. Ruffalo, nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his role in the HBO series "Task", sported a "Be Good" pin, a symbol of compassion, accountability, and activism in response to ICE policies.
The "Be Good" pin is part of a broader campaign that emerged following the death of Good, who was shot on January 7th. The Trump administration alleges the agent acted in self-defense after Good allegedly tried to hit the agent with her vehicle. This incident, along with the New Year's Eve killing of Keith Porter in Los Angeles by an off-duty ICE agent, has sparked protests across the nation.
Ruffalo wasn't alone in his demonstration. Actress and comedian Wanda Sykes, as well as Natasha Lyonne, also wore the "Be Good" pin. Jean Smart showed her support as well. Some attendees wore "ICE Out" pins. Sykes told Variety before the ceremony, "Of course, this is for the mother who was murdered by an ICE agent, and it's really sad...We need to speak up. We need to be out there and shut this rogue government down, because it's just awful what they're doing to people".
Ruffalo stated on the red carpet that the pin was "for Renee Good and for people in the United States who are feeling scared today," further adding, "I love this country. And what I'm seeing happening isn't the America I know".
The "ICE Out" pins reportedly originated from a late-night text exchange between Nelini Stamp of Working Families Power and Jess Morales Rocketto, the executive director of Maremoto, a Latino advocacy group. According to Stamp, "We need every part of civil society, society to speak up. We need our artists. We need our entertainers. We need the folks who reflect society". Morales Rocketto has rallied Hollywood to protest the Trump administration's family separation policies.
The Golden Globes, while a celebration of achievement in film and television, became a platform to voice concerns about the actions of ICE and the direction of the country under the Trump administration. Other winners of the night included "Hamnet" for Best Motion Picture Drama and "One Battle After Another" for Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. Mark Ruffalo won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his role in "Task".
