Manchester United has officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick as their new head coach, effective immediately until the end of the 2025/26 season. The 44-year-old former Manchester United midfielder steps into the role following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim last week. Darren Fletcher, who briefly took charge as caretaker manager after Amorim's departure, will return to his role as U18s manager.

Carrick, a celebrated figure at Old Trafford, enjoyed a 12-year playing career with the Red Devils, during which he won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. After retiring in 2018, he joined the club's coaching staff, serving under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He also briefly served as caretaker manager following Solskjaer's dismissal.

Prior to his return to Manchester United, Carrick was the head coach at Middlesbrough for two-and-a-half years, starting in October 2022. He guided Middlesbrough to the Championship play-offs in his first season.

"Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour," Carrick stated. "I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing". He further added, "I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here. There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves".

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, expressed his confidence in Carrick, stating, "Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United". He added, "He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success".

Carrick's appointment comes at a crucial time for Manchester United, who are currently seventh in the Premier League. The club has also exited both domestic cup competitions. Carrick's immediate challenge will be to galvanize the team and secure a strong finish to the season.

Other candidates considered for the position included former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The club is expected to begin the search for a permanent head coach to take over in the summer. Potential candidates include Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace and Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth.
