Pahalgam, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant tourism, is working diligently to restore its image and economy following the devastating terror attack of April 22, 2025. The attack, which targeted tourists in the Baisaran meadows, resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, and left many more injured. The incident was the deadliest attack on civilians in the region since the 2008 Mumbai attacks and had a significant impact on the tourism sector.
In the immediate aftermath, approximately 50 tourist spots and resorts were closed due to security concerns, and nearly 90% of tourist bookings were cancelled. The attack not only caused immense loss and grief but also threatened the livelihoods of countless individuals dependent on tourism.
However, Pahalgam is showing signs of resilience. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo stated on January 17, 2026, that the tourism sector is gradually recovering as conditions improve. As weather conditions have improved, tourist arrivals have started to increase again.
The government is actively reassessing its tourism strategy to prepare for increasing visitor numbers and ensure sustainable growth. A major project has been conceptualized to promote sustainable tourism in emerging destinations, aiming to reduce the pressure on traditional hotspots across Jammu and Kashmir. By developing new destinations, the government hopes to distribute tourist footfall more evenly, generate employment for local communities, stimulate infrastructure development, attract investment, and mitigate seasonal tourism peaks.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, has lauded efforts to revitalize the tourism sector, emphasizing its critical role in the region's economic recovery. He credited Omar Abdullah's administration for restoring confidence, ensuring security, and re-establishing Jammu and Kashmir as a premier tourist destination. Dr. Abdullah has urged authorities to consider reopening more areas for tourism, particularly those affected by the Pahalgam attack, to restore the tourism sector and send a positive message globally.
While the scars of the attack remain, the spirit of Pahalgam is unbroken. With a focus on sustainable tourism, enhanced security measures, and the development of new tourist destinations, Pahalgam is steadily overcoming the shadow of last year's terror attack and working towards a brighter future.
