Jennifer Lawrence delivers a powerful performance in Lynne Ramsay's 2025 psychological drama, Die My Love. The film, adapted from Ariana Harwicz's 2012 novel, follows Grace (played by Lawrence), a young mother in rural Montana whose postpartum depression and psychosis lead to the unraveling of her marriage and her grip on reality. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and was released in the United States on November 7, 2025.
According to a recent interview, Lawrence knew instantly that she wanted to portray Grace, a character she describes as becoming increasingly unmoored after the birth of her first child. It was also Lawrence who suggested Lynne Ramsay as the director for the film.
In a roundtable discussion, Lawrence shared her insights into playing such an emotionally demanding role and her collaboration with co-star Robert Pattinson. When asked about how she channeled Grace's extreme emotions, Lawrence explained, "On the day, it is normally about channelling adrenaline. It starts with empathy, imagining what the person is going through. Putting myself in Grace's shoes and taking myself out". She further elaborated on the unique aspects of her profession, stating, "The great part about my job is that I get to call up these emotions and get carried away, and when they call, 'Cut!' none of the consequences are real! I just walk walk away with a little bit of a high (laughs)".
Die My Love tells the story of Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and her boyfriend Jackson (Robert Pattinson), who leave New York City for the isolation of Montana. There, Jackson inherits a house from his uncle and the couple starts a family. After the birth of their baby, Harry, and Jackson's increasing absences, Grace begins to experience a mental health crisis.
Ramsay, who co-wrote the screenplay with Enda Walsh and Alice Birch, has described Harwicz's novel as "a surrealistic, dark fairy tale". She said, "It's like, 'Is this real? Is this not real?' You're kind of figuring it out".
The novel was sent to Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi of Excellent Cadaver by Martin Scorsese, who envisioned Lawrence in the lead role after reading it in his book club.
Lawrence has noted that Grace is very straightforward and doesn't have a veneer, so everything was going to be the most truthful way to get at something. She's having a really complex reaction and doesn't have a lot of support.
Die My Love is available to watch on Mubi India. The film also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek.
