Chelsea's Palmer Faces Further Premier League Absence Amid Transfer Speculation: Is It Too Soon For His Return?

Cole Palmer will miss Chelsea's Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday due to a minor thigh injury. This marks the second consecutive match the 23-year-old midfielder has been absent from, having also missed the midweek Champions League win over Pafos.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior had initially suggested Palmer would be fit to face Crystal Palace, stating before the Pafos match that the player felt "a little bit of tightness in his thigh" but "should be absolutely fine". However, in a recent update, Rosenior told Sky Sports that Palmer is "not quite right for this one". He added, "I've said before in press conferences we want to make sure every player is at 100%. He's got a little niggle in his thigh". Rosenior remains hopeful that Palmer will be available for the crucial Champions League game against Napoli next Wednesday, saying, "He's got a chance for Wednesday [vs Napoli]. Let's hope he's back for then".

Palmer's absence is a concern for Chelsea as they aim to build momentum under Rosenior. Palmer has struggled with injury problems throughout the 2025/26 season. He sustained a groin injury at the beginning of the season and was rushed back, which reportedly worsened the problem. He also suffered a broken toe during his two-month absence, further delaying his return. Since returning to the squad, Palmer has only completed two full 90-minute appearances. In 12 Premier League appearances this season, he has dealt with groin issues and a broken toe. Before the Club World Cup last summer, Palmer only missed three of 73 Premier League matches for Chelsea, but Sunday's absence marks the 11th top-flight match he has missed this season.

Adding to the uncertainty surrounding Palmer's situation, recent reports have linked him with a move to Manchester United. Although Palmer supported Manchester United as a youngster, Chelsea have no plans to sell him. According to The Telegraph, Palmer is considered one of the team's "untouchables". Rosenior also expressed confidence that Palmer is happy at Stamford Bridge, stating, "I've had numerous conversations with Cole and he seems very happy to be here".

Despite Rosenior's confidence, rumors about Palmer's potential unhappiness at Chelsea continue to circulate. Palmer's continued absence from the squad is likely to fuel further speculation about his future.
