Alka Yagnik Humbled: Thanks Listeners for Support After Receiving Prestigious Padma Bhushan Award

On the eve of Republic Day 2026, the Government of India announced the Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honors in the country, recognizing exceptional contributions across various fields. Among the esteemed recipients of the Padma Bhushan is the celebrated playback singer, Alka Yagnik.

Alka Yagnik, a name synonymous with melody and a voice that has resonated with millions for over four decades, expressed her gratitude and joy upon receiving the prestigious award. In an exclusive statement, she conveyed, "I want to thank the government for giving me this prestigious honour. And of course I really, really want to thank all my listeners for their unconditional love".

Born on March 20, 1966, Alka Yagnik has been a prominent figure in the Hindi film industry since the early 1980s. With a career spanning over four decades, she has recorded over 22,000 songs in more than 25 different languages, lending her voice to over 1000 films. Yagnik is particularly known for her work in Hindi cinema during the 1990s and 2000s, and is considered one of the greatest and most influential singers in Indian cinema. She is often referred to as the 'Melody Queen'.

Yagnik's contribution to music has been widely recognized, with numerous accolades including two National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, for the songs "Ghoongat Ki Aad Se" from Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) and "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). She also holds a record of seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. In 2019, she was honored with the Lata Mangeshkar Award.

Alka Yagnik's impact extends beyond awards. She remains one of the most streamed artists on YouTube, with billions of streams. Publications such as Rolling Stone, The Times of India, and Filmfare have recognized her versatility and significant contribution to Indian music.

The Padma Awards 2026 list includes other notable personalities. Veteran actor Dharmendra and former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will be posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Actor Mammootty, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari, and banker Uday Kotak are also among those receiving the Padma Bhushan. Additionally, 45 individuals have been selected for the Padma Shri award.

The awards recognize individuals who have overcome hardships and dedicated their lives to serving society. The awardees include those who have worked to promote healthcare, education, and sustainability, and those who have uplifted marginalized communities.
