Liam Rosenior expressed his satisfaction after Chelsea's convincing 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, calling it a "huge test" successfully passed by his team. The win marked Chelsea's first away league victory in over two months and propelled them back into the top four of the Premier League.
Rosenior, in his post-match press conference, acknowledged the difficulty of playing at Selhurst Park, describing Crystal Palace as a "very good team". He highlighted the players' outstanding execution of the game plan and their organization over the past few days. "Very pleasing," Rosenior said. "This is always a very difficult place to come".
Chelsea took the lead in the first half thanks to a goal from Estevao Willian, capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Crystal Palace's Jaydee Canvot. Estevao then turned provider in the second half, setting up Joao Pedro, whose powerful shot proved too difficult for goalkeeper Dean Henderson to handle. Shortly after, Joao Pedro was involved again when his close-range shot was blocked by Canvot's arm, leading to a penalty. Enzo Fernandez converted the penalty, extending Chelsea's lead to 3-0.
Despite Adam Wharton's red card for Crystal Palace after receiving two yellow cards and a late consolation goal from Chris Richards, Chelsea maintained their dominance. Rosenior expressed some frustration about conceding a late goal and missing out on a clean sheet. "Frustrating not to have a clean sheet in the last 10 minutes and we will work on that but a lot of really pleasing signs,” he noted. He had hoped for three consecutive clean sheets and felt the team should have achieved one in this match, especially when playing against ten men. However, he emphasized that he wanted to focus on the positive aspects of the team's performance.
The Chelsea manager praised his team's defensive effort from the front, their effective pressing, and their organized structure. He also commended their clinical finishing in crucial moments.
Notably absent from Chelsea's squad was Cole Palmer, who was sidelined due to a minor thigh injury. Rosenior had mentioned earlier in the week that Palmer was experiencing tightness in his thigh. Speaking to Sky Sports before the game, Rosenior explained the decision to leave Palmer out, saying, "Unfortunately for us, Cole's not quite right for this one". He stressed the importance of ensuring every player is at 100 percent fitness and avoiding the risk of playing players who are not fully fit in January. Rosenior expressed optimism that Palmer would recover in time for Wednesday's game.
Before the game, there were reports linking Palmer with a move to Manchester United. Rosenior dismissed any speculation, saying, "I've had numerous conversations with Cole and he seems, and is, very, very happy to be here".
Looking ahead, Rosenior hopes to build on this win and continue Chelsea's momentum as they aim to climb higher in the Premier League standings.
