On the eve of India's 77th Republic Day, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is being lauded for its bravery, with 13 gallantry medals awarded, including the prestigious Shaurya Chakra. The Shaurya Chakra has been awarded to CRPF Officer Vipin Wilson for his exceptional courage and leadership in repelling an insurgent attack in Manipur.
The CRPF stands as the only Central Armed Police Force to receive this honor this year, marking a moment of pride celebrated under the Union Home Ministry's command. With over 3.25 lakh personnel, the CRPF's dedication to national security is evident through their operations that span anti-Naxal efforts, counter-terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, and counter-insurgency operations in Northeast India.
The Shaurya Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action, or self-sacrifice while not engaged in direct action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes posthumously. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra. It precedes the Yudh Seva Medal.
The award recognizes extreme bravery and commitment to duty in the face of challenging circumstances. The recognition highlights the CRPF’s commitment to national security and valor in difficult circumstances.
In July 2025, CRPF Inspector Jeffrey Hmingchullo, another officer from Manipur, received a hero's welcome after being conferred with the Shaurya Chakra for his bravery during an anti-Maoist operation in Chatra, Jharkhand. During the operation, he eliminated two Maoists and protected his team under fire.
