Mumbai, India – A mathematics professor from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics in Vile Parle, Mumbai, Alok Kumar Singh, was tragically stabbed to death on Saturday evening at Malad railway station. The 33-year-old was allegedly attacked by a fellow commuter following a dispute while alighting from a local train. The incident occurred around 5:30 pm on platform number 1.

Singh was on his way home to celebrate his wife's birthday and had planned a special dinner for the evening. He had even informed his colleagues about his dinner plans before leaving the college. Tragically, what should have been a joyous occasion turned into a devastating loss for his family and the academic community. Singh is survived by his wife, whom he married two years ago.

The accused, identified as 27-year-old Omkar Shinde, a metal polishing laborer, was apprehended by the Government Railway Police (GRP) within 12 hours of the crime. Police used CCTV footage from the Malad station and other points along the train route to track him down. Shinde has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police reports, the altercation began as a minor argument over alighting from the train. The argument escalated, leading Shinde to allegedly pull out a sharp weapon and stab Singh in the stomach. Singh was rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali, but was declared dead upon arrival.

Colleagues remember Singh as a soft-spoken and calm individual who joined the college in early 2024. Before joining NM College, he taught mathematics to Class 11 and 12 students at a Malad-based college and had also worked at an international school in Andheri. He had been appointed as a permanent lecturer at NM College last year and had previously been selected for a similar position at two other colleges.

The news of Singh's murder has sent shockwaves through his family, neighbors, and colleagues. His father, Anil Kumar Singh, is part of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's security team and was in Delhi for Republic Day parade preparations when he received the news.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) is further investigating the matter.
