A 28-year-old Indian-origin man, Dilraj Singh Gill, was fatally shot in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of gunfire near the 3700 block of Canada Way at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time and discovered Gill with critical gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving attempts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation and believes the shooting was targeted and linked to the ongoing gang conflict in British Columbia. According to police, Gill was known to them, and the shooting appears to have a connection to the BC gang conflict.
Shortly after the shooting, authorities discovered a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street, several kilometers from the crime scene. Investigators are exploring the possibility that the burning vehicle is connected to the homicide and may have been used as a getaway car.
Sergeant Freda Fong of IHIT acknowledged the community's concern following the public nature of the killing. She emphasized that a shooting in a public place is extremely troubling for both the police and the entire community. Fong urged witnesses and those in the area to come forward with information to help advance the investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
Investigators are collaborating with the forensic team to reconstruct the events and gather evidence from both the shooting location and the site where the vehicle was found. Authorities are seeking public assistance for any leads related to the case.
The fatal shooting has intensified concerns about gang-related violence in British Columbia. Investigators confirmed that Gill had known associations with organized crime, which is now a central focus of the homicide probe. The police are urging anyone with information to contact the IHIT or the Burnaby RCMP.
