In a recent interview, Barun Sobti, the Indian actor known for his roles in "Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon" and "Asur," opened up about his career choices prior to landing the role in the critically acclaimed web series "Kohrra". Sobti, who is gearing up for the release of "Kohrra" season 2 next month, admitted that he had taken on projects in the past solely for financial gain, a decision that ultimately left him feeling unfulfilled.
Sobti made his acting debut in 2009 in the Star Plus series "Shraddha". He then appeared in "Dill Mill Gayye" and rose to prominence in 2011 with "Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon". He also worked as an operation manager at Jindal Telecom for seven years before entering the entertainment industry.
Speaking about his selection for "Kohrra", Sobti expressed surprise, acknowledging that there are many talented actors. He recalled his initial reaction when Sudip Sharma, the creator of the show, approached him. He was taken aback that Sharma would consider him for such a well-written script. Sobti also recognized Sharma's boldness in casting him and Suvinder Vicky, admitting that they didn't anticipate the show's success.
"I do the things that I can resonate with," Sobti explained. "I tried a couple of things where I was just trying to make money, and every time I went back home, I was not happy". This revelation provides insight into the actor's mindset and his conscious effort to align his professional choices with his personal values.
"Kohrra," a crime thriller set against the backdrop of Punjab, premiered on Netflix in July 2023 and was lauded for its complex characters and nuanced storytelling. Sobti plays Amarpal Garundi, an assistant sub-inspector, and his performance earned him the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2023. Season 2 of "Kohrra" is scheduled to premiere on February 11, 2026, and will feature a new case and a new power dynamic, pairing Garundi with a new commanding officer, Dhanwant Kaur, played by Mona Singh.
Sobti's character, Garundi, will be seen grappling with his past while trying to build a stable personal life. Sobti noted that while the crime element is present, the focus of the new season lies in the emotional journeys of the characters.
This confession about prioritizing artistic satisfaction over financial gain highlights a turning point in Barun Sobti's career, suggesting a deliberate shift towards roles that challenge and fulfill him creatively.
