Manpreet Singh addresses rumours of disciplinary issues following India squad exclusion, citing coach communication.

Manpreet Singh, the former Indian hockey captain, has dismissed rumors of disciplinary issues following his exclusion from the core group of 33 probables for the upcoming FIH Men's Pro League. This marks the first time in 15 years that the two-time Olympic bronze medalist has been omitted from the list.

Reports had surfaced suggesting that Manpreet, along with Dilpreet Singh and goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak, faced exclusion due to a disciplinary breach during the team's tour of South Africa in December. Allegations arose that the trio provided teammate Sukhjit Singh with "drug-laced eatables" or chewing gum containing a banned substance, leading to him feeling nauseous and behaving abnormally, even missing a team meeting.

However, Manpreet has refuted these claims, stating that he requested time off to rest and spend time with his family. In a social media post on Friday, January 30, 2026, he clarified that the decision was made to allow him to re-energize after a demanding schedule. "Since the Paris Olympics, it's been non-stop hockey for me. Back-to-back tournaments, across Asia, Europe, Australia and South Africa," Manpreet stated. He also mentioned the birth of his second daughter and the desire to spend time with his family.

Manpreet also highlighted a conversation with the coach, who, after the Hockey India League, agreed to grant him the much-needed rest. "After a fantastic HIL, where my team Ranchi Royals played d final, Coach spoke to me & informed of his decision to allow me this much-needed rest," he wrote. He thanked Hockey India and the coach for understanding his need for a break and wished the team well for the Pro League.

Despite Manpreet's denial, a Hockey India official confirmed that a disciplinary issue occurred during the South Africa tour, prompting the exclusion of Manpreet, Dilpreet Singh, and Krishan Pathak. The official indicated that Hockey India would further investigate the matter and initiate disciplinary action after reviewing the details of the South Africa incident. Adding to the complexity, reports suggest that India's coach Craig Fulton was against Manpreet's exclusion and even offered to resign, viewing the decision as "external interference". Sources indicate that Fulton argued for Manpreet's inclusion, emphasizing his role as a mentor to younger players.

The India leg of the FIH Pro League is set to commence in Rourkela on February 10, 2026, with India facing Argentina in their opening match on February 11. Manpreet is also one match away from equalling Dilip Tirkey's record of 412 caps for India.
