In a surprising turn of events, Tamil cinema icon Vijay, known as Thalapathy to his fans, has announced his official entry into politics, drawing comparisons to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. The actor, who has enjoyed a career spanning over three decades, revealed his plans to retire from films after completing his current commitments, signaling a firm dedication to his new political venture.
Vijay's decision to fully embrace politics has fueled speculation about the influences behind his move, with many noting the similarities between his career trajectory and that of Shah Rukh Khan. Like Vijay, Shah Rukh Khan has enjoyed immense popularity and has used his platform to express his views on social and political issues, albeit without formally entering politics.
On February 2, 2024, Vijay launched his political outfit, "Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam" (TVK), marking a significant step in his political journey. This move came after years of speculation and political activity, including backing candidates in assembly and local body elections in Tamil Nadu. Vijay has stated that his decision to enter politics is rooted in a desire to address the "corrupt" and "divisive" political culture and bring about "fundamental change" in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay's political ambitions are not entirely new. His organization supported the AIADMK-led alliance in the 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. In 2019, he voiced his opinion against the Citizenship Amendment Act, emphasizing the importance of social and religious harmony. Furthermore, members of his fan club secured 115 seats in the 2022 Tamil Nadu local elections.
The actor's final film, "Jan Nayagan," was released on January 9, 2026. However, actress Mamitha Baiju, who starred alongside Vijay in "Jan Nayagan", shared that Vijay hinted that his decision to retire from acting would depend on the outcome of the elections, leaving fans hopeful for his return to cinema.
In his first interview since entering politics, Vijay named M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) and J. Jayalalithaa as his role models. He has also made it clear that he will contest the upcoming elections solo, dismissing any possibility of an alliance with the BJP. Despite facing challenges, including CBI investigations and censor complications with his film, Vijay remains determined to pursue his political goals.
While some observers are skeptical about actors entering politics, Vijay's immense fan following and dedicated approach could potentially translate into electoral success. However, a stampede at a political rally in Karur in September 2025, which resulted in 41 deaths, has presented a significant challenge for the actor-turned-politician.
Only time will tell if Vijay can successfully navigate the complex world of politics and bring about the change he envisions for Tamil Nadu. Whether he will follow a similar path to Shah Rukh Khan, who has influenced society through his work and opinions without holding office, remains to be seen.
