Michael Carrick is relishing the feeling of securing a late victory at Old Trafford, following Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 win against Fulham on Saturday. The Red Devils appeared to be cruising to victory with a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals from Casemiro and Matheus Cunha. However, Fulham fought back, with Raul Jimenez scoring an 85th-minute penalty and Kevin adding another goal in the first minute of added time, leaving the home fans stunned.
Just as it seemed United had thrown away the win, substitute Benjamin Sesko popped up to score a stoppage-time winner, sending Old Trafford into raptures. The victory marked United's third win in a row under interim boss Carrick and propelled them back into the Premier League's top four.
Carrick, who enjoyed many late wins at Old Trafford as a player, admitted that winning in such fashion is a special feeling. "It's the best feeling I have to say," Carrick said, recalling the era known as "Fergie time". "Some of the best moments I've been part of here, you can dissect performances and there are plusses and not, and then you get a moment of elation and excitement like that".
Carrick further emphasized the significance of winning in front of the Stretford End. "For me there's no better place than in front of the Stretford End like that. It ends up meaning more," he explained. "People leave here with more than just, 'United won today' – it's layers on top of that, the emotion and the feeling and it's why we all love it so much".
Despite the euphoria of the late win, Carrick acknowledged that there is still much work to be done with the team. He was particularly pleased with the character the team showed after conceding a late equalizer. "The character we showed after a big setback, a huge setback, in the 90th minute, to do that coming off what we did last week off a setback (in the 3-2 win at Arsenal) is probably the most pleasing thing," Carrick stated. "To keep the belief, to keep the confidence".
Carrick believes the team is capable of even better performances. "We can play better and that's probably the most pleasing thing," he said. "The rest of the game, we can play better, we can do a lot of things better in certain moments but I can't fault the players' belief. It's taken us through today and it's a good feeling when it does".
The dramatic victory against Fulham underscores the resilience and never-say-die attitude that Carrick is instilling in his Manchester United side. While acknowledging the need for improvement, Carrick is clearly enjoying the ride and the special feeling that comes with winning late at Old Trafford.
