Nirmala Sitharaman: DMK Should Worry About Vijay's Growing Influence in Tamil Nadu Politics | Exclusive

In an exclusive interview, Nirmala Sitharaman has weighed in on the potential impact of actor Vijay's political entry in Tamil Nadu, suggesting that the ruling DMK should be more concerned than the BJP. The Finance Minister's remarks come at a time when Vijay's newly launched party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), is generating considerable buzz in the state's political landscape.

Sitharaman's assessment isn't the first time she's taken aim at the DMK. In September 2025, she criticized the party's "Dravidian model of politics," alleging a "separatist mindset". She accused the DMK of prioritizing regional interests over national unity, particularly in matters of taxation and resource allocation. DMK MP Tiruchi Siva refuted these claims, asserting the party's demands for Tamil Nadu's rightful share of resources were "genuine".

Earlier, in April 2024, Sitharaman had accused the DMK of misleading the public on the Katchatheevu issue, claiming the party was aware of the island's transfer to Sri Lanka despite being in alliance with the Congress at the time. She also challenged the DMK to explain its significant purchases of electoral bonds.

Vijay's political foray has been marked by both enthusiasm and controversy. Recently, Vijay responded to critics who say he is not spending enough time engaging with the media by stating that his supporters will make their presence known on election day. He has positioned TVK as a force against corruption, urging his followers to be "whistleblowers" against corrupt practices. Vijay has also taken a dig at Chief Minister MK Stalin, referencing the latter's comments about losing sleep over ministers' gaffes.

However, Vijay's political journey has also faced challenges. In September 2025, a stampede at a TVK rally in Karur resulted in 41 casualties. Sitharaman visited the affected families, conveying condolences and ensuring aid from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

It remains to be seen how TVK will perform in the upcoming elections. However, Vijay's strong fanbase and anti-corruption platform could pose a challenge to established political parties in Tamil Nadu. Sitharaman's remarks suggest that the BJP views TVK as a potential disruptor, particularly for the DMK, which has dominated the state's politics for decades. The political landscape of Tamil Nadu is bracing for a potentially significant shift as Vijay and TVK gear up for their electoral debut.
