He has also been a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and has held ministerial portfolios in the Maharashtra government.

Tawde's appointment as the election in-charge for Kerala signals the BJP's intent to strengthen its organizational structure and strategic focus in the Southern state. In 2022, ahead of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, Tawde was made the coordinator for these five poll-bound states.
