On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, received a piece of his family's history during a visit to his constituency, Rae Bareli. Vikas Singh, representing the organizing committee of the Rae Bareli Premier League cricket tournament, presented Gandhi with the driving license of his grandfather, the late Feroze Gandhi.
The license had been preserved for decades by Singh's family. According to Singh, the document was found by his father-in-law several years ago during an event in Rae Bareli and was considered a "valuable trust" that needed to be returned to the Gandhi family. Singh's father-in-law passed away, and his mother-in-law safeguarded the license. Upon learning of Rahul Gandhi's visit to Rae Bareli, she felt it was her responsibility to hand it over.
Feroze Gandhi, born in December 1912, was a prominent political figure who won the Rae Bareli seat in the first general election in 1952. He passed away on September 7, 1960.
Rahul Gandhi carefully examined the license upon receiving it on stage. He promptly took a photograph of it and shared it with his mother, Sonia Gandhi, via WhatsApp. He then kept the license with him. The moment was described as a poignant family reunion with both personal and historical significance.
