Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has dismissed claims of a power struggle within the state government, asserting his unwavering support for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Speaking on Monday, February 2, 2026, Shivakumar emphasized that he has consistently stood by Siddaramaiah and will continue to do so in the future.
Shivakumar clarified that the party high command holds the authority to make decisions regarding leadership matters, dismissing the notion that the backing of a certain number of MLAs could influence such decisions.
The Deputy Chief Minister's remarks came during a discussion in the Karnataka Assembly, where opposition leader R Ashoka alluded to Shivakumar's previous statements about the "right time". Ashoka suggested that Shivakumar's camp claimed to have the support of at least 56 MLAs, implying a potential challenge to Siddaramaiah's leadership. Ashoka also claimed that Labour Minister Santosh Lad belonged to the same category, but Lad firmly rejected being affiliated with any particular camp. He countered that the BJP was an "expert" in destabilizing governments.
Responding to Ashoka's remarks, Shivakumar stated that his strength lies in the support of "139 MLAs," including the Chief Minister. He affirmed that Siddaramaiah is "100 percent" with him and reiterated their commitment to working together to fulfill the promises made to the people of Karnataka. Shivakumar expressed that there should be no confusion regarding their united front.
Shivakumar also addressed his social media posts, stating that "Decisions are not taken based on the number but it is the party leadership which decides. It is applies to both yours and my party". He further pointed out that the BJP has a history of replacing chief ministers, changing MLAs, and conducting major cabinet reshuffles.
These statements are an attempt to quell speculation about internal conflict and reaffirm the stability of the Congress-led government in Karnataka. The Deputy Chief Minister's emphasis on party unity and his commitment to Siddaramaiah's leadership seek to reassure both party members and the public of a cohesive government focused on delivering its promises.
