Liverpool have reportedly finalized the signing of 20-year-old French defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes, snatching him from under the noses of Chelsea. The deal is estimated to be worth £60 million, consisting of a £55 million fixed fee with an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. Jacquet is expected to join the Reds in the summer, with a contract running until 2031 and an option for the 2031/32 season. He will undergo a medical on Monday.
Jacquet, a French youth international, had attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and possibly Manchester United. Chelsea were considered frontrunners for his signature midway through January. However, Liverpool presented a compelling long-term project, convincing Jacquet that he would be a key part of the squad immediately. This promise of significant playing time appears to have swayed the young defender's decision.
Several factors contributed to Jacquet's choice. Liverpool made it clear that he would be central to the club's plans. The Reds may view Jacquet as a long-term replacement in their defense. With Ibrahima Konaté yet to sign a new contract at Anfield, Jacquet may have the opportunity to partner Virgil van Dijk in the future.
Chelsea's situation also played a role. The club's decision to potentially keep young defenders like Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr impacted Jacquet's perception of his potential playing time at Stamford Bridge. The presence of several young center-backs already at Chelsea seemingly made Jacquet believe his chances of regular first-team football would be greater at Liverpool.
Jacquet has been a standout performer for Rennes, making 18 starts this season and playing a total of 1,604 minutes, second only to goalkeeper Brice Samba. Known for his range of passing, he averages 2.9 accurate long balls per 90 minutes, along with 4.8 clearances and 0.8 blocks. He spent time at Clermont Foot on loan, before establishing himself as a regular starter at Rennes at just 19 years old.
Liverpool's need for defensive reinforcements is evident, with injuries to key players like Giovanni Leoni and concerns over Ibrahima Konaté's future. While Liverpool declined to compete with Manchester City for Marc Guéhi, the club believes Jacquet offers better long-term value.
