Oilers and Maple Leafs Trade Talk Intensifies: Could a Deal Happen Before the Deadline?

As the NHL trade deadline approaches, speculation is intensifying around a potential deal between the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Both teams face distinct challenges and opportunities, making a trade between them a compelling possibility.

The Maple Leafs, sitting last in the Atlantic Division with a 24-21-9 record, are reportedly open for business and willing to trade. According to Sportsnet, the Leafs have begun contacting teams to gauge interest in their players. Several Maple Leafs players could be of interest to the Oilers. Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet believes Bobby McMann is the most likely Maple Leafs player to be traded, noting his manageable $1.35 million cap hit makes him an attractive target for many contenders.

TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported the Edmonton Oilers are rumored to be targeting a top-nine forward before the trade deadline. The Oilers' depth scoring has been an issue, with their top players often carrying the offensive load. The team eked out a 6-5 overtime victory against the Washington Capitals where all goals came from top-line players.

Several names have surfaced as potential trade targets. Bobby McMann is one prominent name linked to the Oilers. Darren Dreger said the asking price for McMann could be a first-round pick plus. While McMann's affordable cap hit and playing style align with Edmonton's needs, giving up a first-round pick might be too high a price unless McMann is willing to sign a contract extension with the Oilers.

Brandon Carlo, a right-shot, veteran shutdown defenseman with playoff experience, has also been mentioned as a potential target for the Oilers. Carlo carries a $3.485 million cap hit through the 2026-27 season.

The Maple Leafs are also evaluating their goaltending situation. While Anthony Stolarz has been a frequent subject of trade rumors, Bryan Hayes of TSN suggests Joseph Woll should also be considered. Woll has a 13-7-4 record this season, with a 2.87 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage, and is in the first year of a three-year, $11 million extension.

Adding Artemi Panarin to a top six featuring Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would greatly enhance their offense. David Pagnotta reported that Panarin would be willing to waive his no-move clause to join the Oilers as a rental if an extension with the Rangers falls through.

With the trade deadline looming, it remains to be seen whether the Oilers and Maple Leafs can strike a deal that benefits both clubs.
